Minecraft Initiatives: News Hub Page

Senior UX Designer | 2023-2025

Situation

As part of a larger initiative to migrate pages off an outdated CMS, I set off to redesign both the Minecraft Community Page and the Minecraft News Page. At first glance, both pages seemed to serve different purposes, but I quickly noticed that they were largely duplicating the same news content.

What complicated things was that the two pages were owned by different global offices—Redmond (Community) and Stockholm (Game News)—and each had slightly different business goals. On top of the redundancy, both pages suffered from usability issues like outdated content, lack of sorting or filtering, and unclear hierarchy, which created confusion for users and inefficiencies for the team

Target

I saw this as more than just a surface-level migration. I wanted to consolidate and simplify these experiences in a way that still served both the Game and Community teams—while also improving franchise engagement and reducing user confusion.

Approach

I brought together stakeholders from both offices and made a case for merging the two pages into a unified News Hub. I supported this with user journey analysis and data from myself and our experimentation team.

Also, to keep engineering costs low, I reused proven design system components that had already shown effectiveness in driving engagement and interaction.

I also led the addition of new features like filtering and sorting to help players find content more easily. Throughout, I worked closely with the Launcher team to ensure the new experience could be integrated into the Minecraft Launcher as well.

Results

After launch, we saw a 25% increase in engagement with our Featured News section, which contributed directly to our Franchise Engagement goals. The redesign also influenced Launcher UX—top news stories are now surfaced in-client, creating opportunities to serve importance business initiatives and create a more unified player experience.

As a bonus, the Stockholm team was so thrilled about the results that they invited me to present the project at their org-wide Show & Share.
